it is a bit late to be planting packaged peonies. There is a real risk that they will not make it. Just make sure the package that you buy has firm roots. If they are soft, they are not going to make it. The second drawback is they may take 3 years to flower and when they flower, sometimes you do not get the peony pictured on the package. If you still want to grow peonies purchased from walmart,I recommend that you wait until next spring and buy them early. Walmart starts to stock these peonies around late March or early April. Buy the peony then and plant immediately. I think that you will have a better chance at the roots surviving and growing better. You may have flowers in the second year.

Chances are good you'd get neither Karl Rosenfield nor Sarah Bernhardt despite the package labeling.

On a whim at Walmart a few Marches ago I picked up a three roots per package each of what was supposed to be KR and SB - none of the six were correct. But the root stocks were healthy with good pink eyes; sprouted right away potted indoors and planted outside bloomed the first season - they turned out to be singles in varying colors; and all quite lovely. Haven't seen a peony yet I didn't like so I considered this my good fortune. This year they're already huge and loaded with buds despite the fact that winter just left here a month ago.

Gambling with a few dollars might just be worth it to you, but I will concede that June does seem a bit late to be planting bare root stock peonies. But I'm no expert..

I would gamble with the $5 and still plant them this year. Saving 9 months' growing time is OK imo if it survives.

Soak the roots in water for at least half an hour before you plant them. Good luck.
