Trimming After Blooming?

Hi All -

I have 3 peonies; one is gorgeous; the other 2 are still young and only had 1 or 2 blossoms. But the most mature one had many; now that they're gone, the ends of the stalks where the flowers were are very ugly. Am I supposed to cut them? If so, how far back?

I'm fortunate that, even with my black thumb, this peony has thrived. I've done nothing to it each year, but perhaps if I do it'll be even better. So, my main question is as above: should I cut the stalks to make it look better now that the blooms have gone? If so, where do I cut.

Also, should I be cutting the whole plant back in the fall, before winter? If so, how much?

Many, many thanks!

Suzieque
