Phoenix roebelenii like full sun but can also grow in shade. So they would probably grow indoors if you give them the strongest light possible. I've never seen or heard of people growing them indoors, but that could be because of the very sharp needle-like spines. The old fronds don't fall off. You need to cut them which can be a very painful process. You might reconsider keeping them indoors later after some experience with them.

Yes, they grow well indoors. Ideally though, it should be rotated between indoors and a shady, protected spot outside. Give it as much light as possible inside though. Mist it and dont let the roots sit in water. That pot will do it for a few years yet, but maybe even invest in a nice wicker basket or ceramic cache pot? You might want to mulch it with coco chips or something.

I have had one inside for years that is thriving. As others have accurately advised, mine is located in an octagon shaped full-windowed room with plenty of sunshine and get misted with a sprayer 1-2X/month. Water a good 12 Oz/month and it should grow well. Enjoy!

Take it outside at least once a month and give it a hard spray of water with the hose to clean off dust and any spider mites attempting to colonize. It will look all the better for that.
