bay nuts

I have heard that California Bay nuts are edible. (Umbellularia californica)

They are way to strong to eat raw and taste somewhat like a coffee bean after long slow roasting.

I was wondering if any one has made any other use of this native California tree nut..

I am also very curious about any nutritional information. I've heard it rumored that the nuts contain caffeine, I have not yet noticed any affect.

This is a great tree for much of California to put in permaculture guilds. They are beautiful and evergreen, sun and (very) shade tolerant, pretty fast growing, insect repellent, water conserving, shade casting, great to climb. And edible nuts that possibly have caffeine.
