Big Storm

How is everyone surviving the storm? Helena got some MAJOR wind and SHEETS of rain. The wind ranged from 65 to 80 mph reports with damage to barns and downing power lines. It broke limbs off my apricot and pecan trees. We have a 60 some foot pecan tree right beside our house and the wind was whipping it around like a wet noodle. SCARY. We have about decided to cut it down after seeing what we saw this afternoon. It's sad but I'd rather have a house than the tree. Amazing the garden looks great. Not so for my 6 foot wooden fence. Looks like I am going to have some weekend chores propping it back up and putting in new 2/4's. Hope everyone else skated damage, it's a long way from being over according to the tv.

    River,

I am glad that you are OK and that the house is OK. Sorry about the trees....but glad to hear the garden looks great. Poor fence....it was just sitting there minding its own business, and along came that nasty bully of a storm.

It hasn't hit here yet, and I've been out putting up lawn furniture and moving all the container plants under cover, etc. I think we'll get it here between 10:30 and 11:00 p.m.

All day, our part of Love County was just OUTSIDE of the mild risk area. Then, this evening the weather radio started going bonkers.....and now we are in the moderate risk area. (sigh) I figured that might happen, but was hoping it wouldn't.

I know the storm is raging all across the state and I hope all are safe and well.

River - Sorry about your damage, but you and family are safe and that's the most important part. It hasn't arrived here yet. I have carried in a few things that were still small enough to handle, but the rest will just have to rough it out I guess. The Tulsa station is now saying that one part of it is weakening, but the north end of it still looks mean. Warning radio just now started going off, but it isn't for us yet. Looks like a long night ahead.

A few minutes ago they put southcentral and southeastern Oklahoma under a tornado watch until 5 a.m., so I have a feeling it will be a long night.

Power outages are already occurring in scattered locations in Carter and Love Counties just from the wind, which was bad all day, but has kicked up a little harder since sunset. The Marietta Fire Dept. is out on reports of "fires" on power poles, which just may be arcing and sparking, and not actually burning.

All day I watched the weather even though the mild risk area ended a couple of miles west of us. I should have known (and kinda did know) that it might change once the storm line started rolling.

BEEEEEP!! There went the weather radio. Now we're under a severe thunderstorm warning until 11:45 p.m. or something, although technically, it is only northwestern Love County and I am in extreme southern Love County. First the weather radio went off, then the fire pagers went off, so we were warned twice. I have a feeling this is going to be one of those nights when one radio or the other is going off at least a couple of times an hour all night long.

DH will be driving home from work about the time the storm is hitting here. I've got my boots beside the bed and flashlight on the nightstand....just in case. It has been YEARS since we've had to go to the tornado shelter in the darkness, and I doubt we'll have to do it tonight, but you just never know.

If we thought the winds here, which have blown regularly in the 20s and 30s all week and gusted into the mid-40s were bad (and they were), then what will everyone think if this line of storms rolls through with the forecasted wind gusts of 75 m.p.h.? At least any hail we get is supposed to be no larger than quarter-sized.

    Y'all stay dry.

We somehow managed to keep our electricty, even when Val was telling Gary that all of SW OKC was dark. lol

We live RIGHT by the airport, so I was sure that when Hank was talking about all the power flashes, we'd be in the dark soon. But, thankfully, it never happened. We didn't even have any plant damage that I could see this morning. AND the hummingbird feeder is still in one piece.

    BTW, what IS a "gustnado"?

    Tisha,

I wrote a brief description of a gustnado on another thread--the one called "Wind", I think. I'd never heard of gustnadoes OR drecho winds until we moved here. When it comes to weather, I think Oklahoma is in a class all by itself!
