Jalapeno need help!

Hi Im Steven, I am from Ontario Canada. I have recently bought a jalapeno pepper plant within the past six months or so. At first it was full of mature peppers which we picked and made stuffed peppers with. I know it is winter here and it doesnt get enough hours of light to produce fruit, but it is flowering. The base of the plant seems to be getting a bit rotten and i have already used a funguscide called no damp with no luck of repairing the base of the stock on my pepper plant. I pruned and cut back a few shoots before winter and it quickly produced new shoots. The new shoots are very healthy producing very nice white flowers. I took one of the shoots and tried cloning it. There are obivious variables that effect the propagation of different species of plants but my pepper plant was the only one out of dozens that I have tried that just wont root (including a cactus). My main problem is that i am worried that this rot at the base of my plant will kill it and i cant even seem to clone the beautiful new shoots, even with rooting compounds. I am new to this site and I would greatly appreciate any input and if there is any way i could send a picture let me know.

I dont know how to help but if you are set up to do rooting, why not just start some seeds for fresh new plants?

I wouldnt bother trying to clone them it can take months for them to take, look back at old posts theres one about cloning and such.I tried, trust me. Better to start new. I have some Early Jalalpeno seeds if you want some.

Hi I have a 4 month old jalapeno plant that produces many flowers but they all slowly fall off! I have it under a 400 watt hps light and do have a fan on it. Can anyone help here?

Hi Stevie - I'm not sure that most fungicides will work as a cure for existing problems, usually they are used as a preventative. As others have mentioned it might be best to just start new seeds assuming there wasn't something very special about this particular plant.

For "Johnny 2009" I'm guessing you may have a pollination problem. You could also have blossom drop if there is too much fluctuation in air temps or soil moisture. You might get more info if you post your own separate question with a good, specific subject line like "Why are my jalapeno flowers dropping?" or something else.

    Good luck both!

They said I shouldn't even try. I ended up going out two and a half weeks ago and bought a easy grow dome with peat moss pucks and took 36 cuttings off the plant and threw away the remains. Ive been misting cuttings and inside of the dome with a spray bottle of water and once a week while i sprayed with no damp fungicide. They have started to root and are almost ready for pots. There is lots of time for them to mature before they go outside and i'm really excited to see the results.

I'm about as far from being an expert as it gets, but in your position I'd be very careful about moisture; it seems possible that your problem is overwatering, and if that's the case, it's probably better to cut back on that than applying fungicide all the time.

Today i woke up and looked at my peppers and decided it was time to transplant the ones with roots breaking through the peat moss. I left the remaining 14 in the dome and I will likely have to plant those in the next few days. I will not be spraying the ones I planted anymore but the ones in the dome i will be. Im pretty sure it is important to keep cuttings very moist and humid when they are growing roots. I also started out at the beggining by putting about 400 pin sized holes in my dome for some air cirrculation. Two weeks in I cut open 4 quater sized holes Because they had already shown signs of roots. Yes overwatering must have been my original problem and i will try to avoid doing this in the future, but I am glad it turned out the way it did and would gladly recommend using those Mckenzie Easy Grow Dome with peat moss pucks to anyone. There amazing.

What is really important to get roots to grow is warmth. Nothing like warm to get the roots growing. They will just not root if they are cold.

However, I prefer to use seeds. Just too easy with seeds.

Knowing from experience the work involved I would encourage people to follow the instructions. I saves the donor lots of time/work.
