growing in soil

ive been growing peppers indoor with hydroponics but never tried with soil so i have a few questions for this coming season.

the peppers i plan on growing are: cayenne, cal wonder (sweet), scotch bonnet and tobasco. i plan on growing 5 of each in containers outdoor.

i plan on starting seeds in rockwool cubes and then putting them in the containers. im wonder what brand of soil would be best? and what fertilizer should i purchase?

    Hey chinamon,

How are the Bhuts doing in your hydro setup?

I had great success last year growing in 5 gallon pots with ProMix BX. I recommend you try it. You should be able to find a garden center that sells bails of it. I paid $24.99 / bail last year. One bail should fill 20 or so pots.

As for fertilizer, last year I started with a top dressing of good mushroom compost and then fed with a 1/4 strength 20.20.20 mix every now and then. Worked for me.

Basically just about any garden soil will do. But it would be better to use some potting soil that has good drainage while at the same time has good moisture retention.
You can mix your own or buy them. To make you own, get somw good garden soil(sift/screen it), add some compost(sifted/screened), add some peat moss, add some perlite.
There you have it ; Just as good as or even better than pro=Mix.

    ottawapepper,
the bhuts wouldnt produce fruit no matter what i tried so i cut them down. they grew like champs in vegetation though.

who makes promix bx? will i find it at home depot or walmart?

    chinamon,

Wow, a bummer they didn't fruit. Did you switch to fruiting nutrient mix when they flowered?

I haven't seen Pro-Mix at CDN Tire or Home Depot. In Ontario it's usually available through garden centers (not big boxes).

    Hi chinamon (Jeff),

Yep, but just on my way out, I'll send a note tomorrow with my contact info.

I forgot to add the link to the manufacturer for Pro-Mix. See link below.

Here is a link that might be useful: Pro-Mix source

    ottawapepper,
i called a local nursery (sheridan nurseries) and they said they dont carry the big brand ProMix but they have their own brand. i think the guy said it was 4gal compressed bale for $35. i might just give that a try instead of trying to hunt for the brand name stuff. i need to find somewhere that sells nursery containers (3gal or 5gal) in canada that ships relatively cheap... or somewhere local. nobody seems to sell them locally. :(

    the tripster,
i would prefer if you asked me the questions here. im no expert hydroponic grower but i think i know the basics.

    chinamon,
No problem, What hydroponic solution do you find works best for the growth period and where can I find it?

    Thanks,
    Jeff

    Hi Guys,

Chinamon you should check your local Canadian Tire for Pro-mix, I found mine there.
Bill, can you recommend some fruiting nutrient mix to try? My BJ are flowering right now.

    Thanks alot,

    Ravi

    tripster,
i used botanicare pure blend pro bloom for both veg and flower periods. worked very well (except for my bhut crop which bloomed but didnt produce fruit). i recently bought DNF nutes and will try those on my jalapeno crop once the seeds germinate. i will try grow and bloom formulas.

    trfanatic,
im guessing i would have to wait until spring to find it there? or would they have that sitting around all year round?

im looking at the canadian tire website and they have a few variations of pro-mix.

premier pro-mix: potting and seeding mix
pro-mix: all purpose potting and seeding planting mix
pro-mix: all purpose container planting mix
    premier pro-mix: perennial planting mix
pro-mix: all purpose outdoor planting mix
premier pro-mix: hanging basket planter mix

which one of these are closest to pro-mix bx?

Might want to check the container forum. There are some terrible suggestions here. Compost for example is not a good additive for containers.

Those so-called "pro mixe"s are nothing but mostly peat moss, some compost, some top soil and some pearlite. That is why they are fuffy and light weight.

I know that the growers use a lot of peat moss. Because it is light weight for handling, shipping and ease of transplanting. But in my garden ,I am not concerned with any of those issues.

I like the Miracle Grow brand potting soil for starting plants. It is fairly heavy and hold moisture well. A full starter cup will pack down to 3/4 when watered. Once my seeds have a good sprout going I fill around the stem with more soil leaving just enough room to water them. Many plants I let sprout and then fill the cups more. I start much of my garden indoors because I live in Michigan where it might be cold until June.

I'm not a pro or anything that is just what is working for my conditions with the way I do things. LOL... this post jogged my memory as I need to plant a second round... jalpenos and habeneras already up and going! I start them under a light then move them to a window so only a few at a time get started.

i start all my seeds in rockwool cubes so all i really need to know is a good potting soil.

If you are continuing to grow in hydro, what do you use after the rockwool cubes? and after how big do you switch?

    Thanks
    Jeff

i keep the seedlings in rockwool and put it in a net pot filled with hydroton. you're not gonna be able to remove the seedlings from rockwool because the roots have grown through the cube.

I may be off topic some, but....I used the peat plug in a hydro basket amongst the hydroton. After the first true leaves, the peat is easily rinsed off, place the roots back into the basket of hydroton. There is no way of transplanting in rockwool seperate of the plant roots.
