these are relatively thirsty palms, so something like MiracleGro mix with a bit of added pumice might be good, though I tend to use a palm soil for everything potted... they are not picky palms. These are cold sensitive Sabals, but will probably be easy in your climate. I have not had any particular issue with this species other than cold and arid, hot weather (another unlikely event in your climate)

Actually, I think they the least cold tolerant of the Sabals, but the fastest growing! Strong relationship b.t.w. between cold hardiness and growing slowly! I have a containerized specimen and it does do reasonably well in a container.

Thanks for those replies! I am quite sure mauritiiformis is the most cold-sensitive of all sabals, but was greatly encouraged to see them flourishing nearly 100 miles further north of me in Sarasota -- even if Selby Gardens does enjoy a very warm marine microclimate.

With canals a couple hundred yards north and south of me, the Caloosahatchee nearby and the Gulf just a few miles away, I think my winter climate is usually mild enough to keep from harming these sabal m's. I just want them to flourish! Today I potted them up in a mix of good, peat-y potting soil, extra perlite, some sand, and lava rock. I'm starting them off in dappled shade, and the rain and clouds this weekend are a great starting point!
