Family Room help!!!

I have multiple problems with this room. It's dark. The bay window is not centered on the wall. The tv is in the lower cabinet. The sofa "floats" and there are many openings to the room.

Is there any way the tv could be moved to the other cabinet? I can see the reasoning behind placing the lounge chair and ottoman to view it, but the sofa is blocking some of the light. You say it is "dark" so if the chair and sofa were switched, there would be less blockage of the windows. Also, with the tv moved, the cabinet next to the bay would stay closed, allowing for a "stackback" of drapery on the wall there to the left. I would mount a decorative rod outside of the bay for a floor to ceiling drape that could completely close or open back to the left and stack there by the cabinet. Sheer roman shades in the windows could help too. Try centering the rug on the bay. Glass topped tables will give a lighter feel to the room and tall pieces (bockcases, baker's racks, or just bwo beautiful pieces of art) on the two walls flanking the doorway will counter balance the FP and draw attention away from the unbalanced placement of the bay.

The windows are symmetrical so on the other side is the living room with the same window treatment and that is the front of the house. I used to have the sofa on the other side of the room as you suggested but it did block traffic flow from the pool table area. This room is a real challenge!! And it's a 2 story which adds to the problem. If I move the couch and then move the tv, it would be really tough to see the tv from the couch. Love the idea of the stackable draperies and I will try to center the rug to the bay window. Thank you so much for your help!

HI -- peataylor --- One only gave us one picture to go by and you said the room is a challenge ... would you be able to give us some more photos of each wall direction of the room ? Thanks

I did post more pics. Scroll down a bit and you will see them. This was my first time uploading photos so it did take me a few trys!

I didn't think the tv/couch arrangement would be that different on the other side of the room as the two sides look pretty symetrical. The sofa must be further inside the bay than it appears. Do the window treatments the same in both rooms, especially the blinds/shades that show from the outside. Lined drapes will look the same in both rooms, so you can play with those a bit. There are some interesting blinds that are a combo of sheer fabric and tilting vanes so you get complete privacy or filtered light. Have you ever considered switching this room and the pool table room? Don't know if there is adequate room to shoot pool in this room, but if there is, you might be happier with the tv in the bar room. Why don't you post pics of it and take some measurements?

Hi! This is like Christmas for me! All of these ideas are great! Yes, the couch does sit into the bay, almost all the way into the bay. The right corner of the bay is blocked slightly by a load bearing wall as well. I have thought about moving the pool table as you said but it's REALLY dark and narrow in there. I did post more pics of that area but as this was my first time uploading photos, it took me a few trys. The title is the same "family room help"
Thank you for your input. SOOOO appreciated!

this is not the way the room looks now. But you can see the opening and the pool table. Sorry to confuse you, yikes

This pic shows the view of pool table "room" and bar area from the kitchen. Maybe this will help...

Actually, I really like how you've handled the space. I think I would lean towards switching the placement of the sofa and the chair, so the sofa would face the TV and the window, instead of away from the window. Since you have a lot of space with the connecting rooms, you want to make cozier areas within each room: I think the family room space would be more inviting with your back toward the pool table and your face toward the window when you are seated at the couch.

Actually I came across your photo looking for TV cabinet ideas, and I really like the way yours is set up. Is this a custom installation? Can you tell me roughly the dimensions of the cabinet for the size of TV you have? It looks similar to mine (51") and I have a swing-arm tv mount like the one shown in your cabinet. I'd originally planned to place it higher on a wall above a (non-functional) fireplace, but there is a big problem with glare with the tv mounted high. I'd rather get it into a lower cabinet like yours.

Thank you Molly! That's exactly what I did! It's still a work in progress....wish I could snap my fingers and make it just happen, but you know how that goes! I'm actually looking for something special for the blank wall behind the sofa....maybe to display family pics??? Also looking for a corner cabinet. These things take time for me!!!
