Sorry, but it looks like the cold killed them this past winter. Where do you live? Lots of places in the deep south saw temperatures in the single digits which is too cold for most pindo palms to handle. If you cut off the fronds and get a saw and saw back the top foot and a half - 2 feet of trunk and see healthy tissue, your palm may sprout back from there, but if the tissue looks dead there, then it won't come back.
They were beautiful palms! I hope you decide to replant them. If not, I would look into getting some Trachycarpus or Sabal palmettos (perhaps underplanting those palms with some nice needle palms). Trachycarpus and palmettos are much cheaper than Butias and more cold hardy too! They will survive the next bad rough winters. Needle palms would survive even the lowest temperatures ever recorded in most zone 8s.

Thank you, Alex. We are in East Central Alabama. I am so disappointed because they were one of my favorite features of the yard!

I'd give them a bit more time before surgery. I had a Med Fan totally defoliate and it's now pushing 3 new fronds, a Trachy spear and 2 fronds pulled but it now has new spears and a Phoenix Sylvestri survive 2 degrees. Patience may just let these beauties surprise you, but then again, I did lose a Pindo two years ago.

I think I see green, if so then they're not dead. As a rule of thumb, you can cut off any brown, but should leave anything green.

Spraying the crown and inside the crown with liquid copper fungicide would help new growth as well.
