Aleppo Pepper?

I've heard of this variety and it's big in the Middle East, but it doesn't seem like there are any seed sources or people widely growing it here. Anyone growing this variety?

    Mine just sprouted.
Aleppo #36 , #37 and one just called Aleppo.
I got mine from a trade.

Smokermaster, I hope you give a review at some point and pics!!!
I'm going to continue to look for these seeds, but I was hoping to hear some grow stories.

    Don't hold your breath.

Mites killed 99% of my plants last year.
No pods or seeds.A bunch of dead sticks.

U.C.Davis says mites are forever.Might be able to keep them at bay but never get rid of them.

Already saw a few mites on some plants and this is winter when they are supposed to be hibernating.

I have a feeling I'm screwed again this year too.

Only sprouted 75 seeds this year.

    Usually do 300 or 400,twice a year.
I can grow cool weather stuff here in winter usually.

Smokemaster, have you tried spraying your plants with a mixture of Fish Emulsion and water?
I had some red mites appear on my Blood Orange, and I sprayed immediately...seems to have worked.

    NOTHING WORKED!
Started out with mite eating critters($300.00 worth of them),then soap spray, neem, malathion, dursban(sprayed so much malathion and dursban the birds flying over my garden were dropping out of the sky from the fumes).
    Mites are still here.
As I said, they are hard tio kill ,of not impossible and can only be kept at bay.
I could hose the plants down at dark thirty AM and by noon my plants were totally covered in webs.

They killed everything-1-5yr. old manzanos,a 15yr. old Habanero De Arbol...

The Aleppo 36 and regular Aleppo put out pods already.
Lots of the 36,only 1 or 2 of the plain aleppo.
    No pics,computers hate me.
Last upgrade won't let me even use photobucket or upload or download pics.
Aleppo 36 is full of pods.Picked 25 or so pods today and there are as many if not more on the plant along with buds.
The Aleppo has a lot different looking pods.Much bigger.
I'm going to smoke dry the the pods for powder.

Sounds like you got back on track. How did you get past the mites? Vodoo, sorcery, alien intervention? How do you like those alepo pods? I've never even heard of that type of pepper. I hope it was worth all the trouble. Good luck!

I also got some seeds from 2014 swap and am growing Aleppo.
I read somewhere that said Aleppo grows 3 to 4 ft tall. I hope not. Otherwise I have to do some topping and pruning.

Anybody grew it last year ?

I got some seed this year on this forum and will be growing them. It seems they are grown in Syria and S. Turkey in what is now a war zone. It would be a real shame to loose any pepper due to radical human activity so preserving this pepper is important and as growers we should do our part.
Cross Country sells seeds and plants if you cant find them here but I expect you will probably get an offer here.If all else fails I could split the seed I have just to have more people grow them, otherwise I plan on growing them all .
ISIS controls most of the Aleppo growing area and farmers cant grow it putting a serious threat on its future. Please do your part in preserving this culinary gem.

I bought some off pepperlover.com. I believe buckeye pepper company has them as well.

I was surprised to see that aleppo is not on the Slow Foods Ark of Taste since it's in danger of disappearing. I'm really excited to be growing it this year! I have 2 neighbors that do big veggie plant sales every year and I'm hoping to get them hooked on what I grow so they'll grow them out next year and get them in the hands of more and more people.

I bought several seeds from pepperlover a few months ago including aleppos. In my Paypal notes I listed all the varieties to make things easier on Judy. Next thing I know Paypal had put a hold on the transaction for some reason (that's never happened to me before).

Turns out Aleppo is Syria's largest city so we surmised they had to make sure we weren't terrorists transferring funds to the war zone first. :D

PS Judy has a great sense of humor, plus always includes extras with your purchases. Top notch vendor.

Lol that's funny mecdave. I got mine from Judy as well. Here's a pic of one of them.

If anyone who has aleppos seeds, would you be interested in sending me 2 or 3 for postage. I have nothing for trade. I love peppers. I would love to grow this pepper and share the seeds

I grew them last year. Got my seeds from buckeye pepper co. Excellent pepper. Mild heat with a really good flavor. Meaty. I like them even better dried. Seemed to make them even sweeter

My overwintered one is branching out again. I also have a few seedings started.

Anyone have an answer to Seysonn's question about how big these plants get? I got some as a gift from someone on this forum and am excited to be able to grow them. I was delighted that most of the eight seeds I planted sprouted in 5-7 days, which was faster than any other variety I'm growing. I want to dry them for use in cooking. I've heard they are similar in flavor to urfa biber peppers from Turkey. Any advice about growing or using them?

They supposedly make a great flake or powder. I'm really excited to try them out this season.

Good to hear they make a good powder. That's my project for this year--varieties that make good powder. In addition to Aleppo, I'm also growing four paprika varieties, Piment de Espelette, and Tap de Corti.

Cool. I am doing Aleppo and Piment d'Espelette for the first time this year. I have had great powder from Mulato peppers. When I grew Alma Paprika, the skin was so thick, it never dried properly, even after more than 24 hours in a 140 degree drying oven. There must have been enough moisture left to make room for mildew, because that's how it smelled.

Alma Paprika is one of the paprika types I'm growing. Thanks for the heads up on it. I'd read elsewhere some negative things about it. Anyhow, I'm growing three other paprikas: Kurtovska Kapija, Szegedi 80, and Szentesi Cserasznye.

Alma paprika is a lovely plant. The peppers are a bright fiery red and almost perfectly round. It's worth growing for its beauty alone. I also made some chicken paprikash using the fresh alma paprika peppers and two kinds of store-bought paprika. It was very good. So don't give up.

My Aleppo is growing very bushy. I don't this it will grow 3-4ft tall, as I have heard.
How is yours growth habit/pattern ?

    Seysonn

Thanks Ohiofem for telling me all the good things about Alma Paprika. I'm looking forward to seeing it grow.

Seysonn mine bushy but they are also some of my tallest plants compared to the others I started at the same time. I've had to pinch off a lot of flowers off that one I posted earlier in this thread.

Anyone have an answer to Seysonn's question about how big these plants get?

Answer: no more than 2 feet (thats where mine is).

Im growing some Alma this year too. Good or bad, I just want to see it grow and taste it, maybe even cross breed it with manzano if possible. aleppo

This is my third year growing Alma Paprika. We love the flavor but it's kind of sneaky for people who don't like hot, a sweet pepper flavor that bites you when you don't expect it. Drying it? No. I dry mine for a bit and then throw them in the freezer

    Thanks Ronny
My aleppos , still inside, are about 8 - 9" tall and one has a pod.

I have Golden Cayenn about 12", , Pepperoncini about 18". and Lemon Drop about over 2 feet tall .
Chenzo is the same size as Aleppo. It has naturally tree like bushy form.

    Seysonn

    Seysonn,
Thats a big Chenzo. What you been giving it... steroids. Did you get red pods yet?

I have 2 overwinters and they are about a foot high but really bushy. Alot of nice pods but not a big bush. Almost like an ornamental. The Mother bush was about 2 feet though. Hopefully the new ones I have will be bigger.

I have a bunch of plants that I transplanted to 1 gallon containers and for some reason, at 6 inches they start to pod. They grow super fast in the smaller pots. I pull all of the early pods when I see them to give the plants some time to grow. Once there big enough, I will move some to bigger pots.

    Thanks Ronny,

I feed all my plants low dosage (1/3 strength) of MG water soluble stuff.

The Chenzo pods are still coffee brown. My Numex Twilight is the one covered with pods. One amazing ornamental.

I won't be able to take them out til the end of April, weather permitting.
The super hots are very stocky.
    End of report. :-)

Just wanted to add an updated pick of that same Aleppo. It's branching out great. I've picked a bunch of flowers off of it. I may let the next ones set though now that it's potted up.
