It was George with the shop vac idea. My idea is, now take the grasshoppers and go fishing, and if you run out of grasshoppers I will try to send you some squash bugs.

Many, many years ago my aunt would pay my two cousins and me a penny for each grasshopper we caught. Now that was pretty good pay because we would frequently have a couple of summers in a row where the grasshoppers were plentiful and we were quite proficient in grabbing those critters. Only one problem - we would put the grasshoppers in the glass Coke bottles. Getting them in was easy, getting them back out to count them was the problem! But we had fun and the fact that it reduced the grasshopper population was secondary to us, although it was important to our aunt. Sorta miss those days.

Mary, thanks for sharing that story. I might try paying my kids for work in the garden. See if that helps motivate them.
