The Cat, Cascade or Cataract palm (Chamaedorea cataractarum) is actually a rheophyte, so you can keep it as wet as you like. Although it still prefers a well draining soil, it is better to not let the soil dry out. As with many rheophytes, it prefers a slightly acidic medium.

You can view my Cat Palm at my website, linked below. It is a fairly small potted specimen, but has already flowered twice this year and looks like another flower spike is forming. It is kept in my polytunnel, where humidity is generally 40-60%. These plants prefer a fairly shady location, but will take some sun as they get larger.

My Cat Palm is having problems too. It never fully recovered from the damage my cat did to it. The tips of the leaves are still brown, and it is growing VERY slowly. It hasn't grown new shoots in I don't know how long. I think I need to switch containers too, right now it is in a decorative pot with no drainage holes on bottom.

Does anyone know if this type of plant will do well with a hydroculture system??

Ditto what neofolis says about cats not appreciately the occasional drying out between watering. For palms, they really do prefer life on the moist side. Once you remember this, they are not especially difficult.

We have one planted on the side of the house near the A/C drip lines...it gets more sun than I would have thought that plant would have liked, but it is thriving in that damp area. We live in FL so the a/c runs year round.

Do we need the drainage container like the holes at the bottom.. I have a plastic container there is a net type plastic thing inside the container no holes at the bottom . Is it a right container I m using. The tips of the palm tree are getting brown otherwise it’s good and healthy. Plz give me some suggestions for the treatment. I cut down all the brown branches
