You have to keep your planting medium moist but not soggy. They do not need light until after they germinate. I keep my seed trays covered with plastic until the seeds germinate and then move the seedlings under lights.

The seeds had germinated(Using coffee filters) and then I planted them. That is when I killed everything off.

Ah, well once they germinate they also need to be kept moist and not soggy--they especially don't like sitting in water. I have germinated seeds in paper towels and then sowed them as soon as a radical showed. This meant the plant did not actually come above the soil surface for several days. If this is what you are doing, leave them out of the hot window untill they are well up.

deanreedy, I poke four ¼" holes around the very bottom sides of the cup and one ¼" hole in the bottom center.
When my seedlings are transferred to the cups I keep them in starter trays which acts as a basin for water. I add approx. 3/8" of water to the try.
The mix in the cups then wicks the water from the tray through the holes in the base of the cups.

This technique works well for me as I have found a pre-determined amount of water will give me a happy medium (not too wet / not too dry).
Certainly like John stated, they don't like extremes.

I use Jiffy seed starting soil, One item is that it rewaters with ease.

Could I use the poking hole method in the cups and use just regular sterile soil to start these germinated seeds? Regular soil seems to have more mostiure.

I just use plain ol' Miracle Gro potting soil to sow everthing. It's all I've ever used :)

This was a Strawberry Container,11x8" and 4" deep...I just covered the slots that are along the bottom sides with duct tape and left the bottom holes for drainage. I used the lid for germination using the tape to seal the open sides and above air vents. After first signs of hypocotyl emergence I removed the tape but kept the lid. After everything emerged the lid came off completely and the container now sits in the south facing window.
