Hi, I am looking for a good size Areca catechu (5 gallon would be a satisfying size for me). I was wondering has anyone ever seen one at any of the Home Depot or Lowes in So Cal?
I've never seen a large one at all, let alone at a big box store. This palm is not an outdoor survivor here. Of course, neither is cocos nucifera, and they still sell those, go figure. I've seen beautiful Hyophorbe lagenicaulis in 24" boxes, which will only make it with careful siting, canopy, and pampering. But no Areca catechu.
I have some nice 5 gallon Areca catechu that I keep in my greenhouse that I could sell you. What are your plans for it? They will not survive outside year round anywhere in CA. You could keep it in a pot outside until December and bring it out again in May.
Cagary, my plan is to keep it a pot for as long as I can. And gradually moving to the biggest pot size I can. I want to enjoy looking at this palm everyday and having it in a pot on my front door would be awesome.
Maybe if I win the lottery I will find a place for it in my future mansion's atrium. Heheh. I understand this palm will likely require a lot of special attention and I have no problem with that. Even when brought indoors during winter, I plan to get a humidifier and grow light just for it alone. This would be my special palm if I do get a hold of one, I love the look of them a lot.
Hmm, can you tell me about selling it, like how would you ship and if I could pay through paypal or postal money order. THanks!
Actually I have 2, but both are in pots. I move them out in the summer and move them in come winter. One is a nice size Big Box variety and the other is a more special "Macapuno" coconut from the Philippines. Not that I'll ever get nuts, but the inside of the coconuts it produces only has a gelatinous substance inside, no water and no meat. I think the tree itself looks the same.
