To put it simply......no. :) They need heat and high light to do remotely well. I am surprised that these "garden" centers can get away with the false advertising. I guess their money back guarantee covers all those that fall victim.

Yes; I kept one about 5 years and it did pretty well. Try to get it some light during the winter days. If you can, cart it outside once a week and flood the soil.

I've had one for 3 or 4 years and it's doing great! Outside in part sun in summer and inside in East window over winter. It doesn't seem to mind the drier air indoors like some other tropical palms and it doesn't mind a small pot either. I say GO FOR IT, you'll enjoy it until it gets too large for your space.

I dont know anything about spindles.

I have had one for years as an indoor/outdoor containerized plant. Mine is summered outdoors from from mid April through October and overwintered under flourescent light. One word of caution, they can really burn if you don't first acclimate the palm gradually to the stronger light conditions outside (personal experience). I notice them being sold in my area much more commonly than even a few years ago. The only negative is that they are really large palms and their scale can overwhelm most indoor situations (guess this is true with many species though). All in all, I'd say they're rather robust and not too difficult. P.S. The spindle palm's close relative the 'bottle palm' (Hyophorbe lagenicaulis) , seems to be a lot more difficult to grow indoors. Anyone successfully mangaging a bottle palm in their house??

Heres my big baby. Doing very well. Its on its 2nd leave, so it will probably get 3 this year. Its in a 27 gallon pot. These are the perfect palm if you have room for them in the winter. I have never had any trouble with this palm.

Looks great, any ideas why the older fronds have yellowed? I would imagine that gal likes lots of water. She needs a baby sister though, have you gotten a big bottle yet?

I have two spindles and they do very well with half a day of bright light during winter. They are very easy to take care of . Be very careful exposing them to strong sunlight in the spring, they will burn fast.

topher...I think I told you once before, I believe its 10 years old or so. I got it when it was a little squirt with no trunk. I have 2 more that are forming trunks.

xerophyte_nyc...the older leaves tend to turn as they start dieing off. I get about 3 new leaves every 14 months, as each new leaf opens, the one on the bottom starts turning quicker. I normaly cut off the bottom 2 leaves as they start looking bad, but this year I wanted too see how long it took them to fall by themselves. You cans ee that spear in the center, it has grown super fast in the last few weeks. I think I am going to check the growth rate tomorrow. I havent gotten my big bottle yet. I have some small ones. I might wait until next year and go pick me up a few in FL. I want to get me 2 about the same height.

cali-wanna-b...I always put mine plants in the shade for a few weeks once I take them out of the greenhouse. Then move them into their homes.

I have the H.indica also and its a fast grower. I am hoping in 2 years to have it up and looking good. Its about 2 or 3 feet now. I am not sure if its the red or green form.

Chris, it takes a while at first and then once it starts the trunk, you can see about 2 to 3 inches a year growth. Each band is about a year on the top part and the bands at the bottom are less than a year.

Yeah they are supposed to be a lot faster than the regulars.

Spindle Palms are very easy to grow inside- and are not that fussy. They do however require a few hours of sunlight a day- they will not do well in a low to mid light situation.

They like to dry out between waterings, and are pretty pest resistant.

I agree, they are EASY indoor palms.

Mine overwinter in a warm basement under fluorescent lighting. They would do infinitely better than the overused Majesty palms, that are extremely temperamental indoors (I only grow that one for the challenge and not even in the house, it goes into a chilly garage and manages to survive). The only thing with Spindle (or the related, Bottle palms, for that matter,), they will burn brutally if you put them outside without first acclimating them to outdoor sunlight. Once acclimated, they can thrive in full sun. The thing that makes them good indoors, is that they are very tolerant of dry air.

Yes I have also grown them with florescent lighting in the past and currently use LED lighting and they do great. Great point about acclimating to natural sunlight if you do put them outdoors because they will burn. I've had this happen to a few of my Palms in the past not knowing what I'm doing lol👍

MOST plants will burn if not acclimated to outdoor sun (all my 100's of plants Summer outside, as long as I can still physically manage that feat!), but Hyophorbes (genus for Spindle and Bottles), are in a separate class onto themselves for being unforgiving to unacclimated sun exposure. Been there, done that, and learned from experience.
