Oh versus Zero

Sorry little rant here, not directed at anyone here at all. Maybe its just in Oklahoma but it drives me crazy when people say "oh" when referring to the number zero. For example there was a radio commercial for someone and they said call us today at 918-555-OH 2 OH 9 or something like that.
Please Dont take offense. I'm just grumpy today I guess. LoL.

Also yesterday it was 80 today is headed for a balmy 40 with rain. man I love Oklahoma weather................not.

'Oh', Mike...we should just be happy for the rain, right? ;)
The 'O' and zero thing can be annoying.
My back still hurts from dragging all the plumies, jasmines and countless other plants back down into the basement.
Just when you think spring is here the cold comes back! :)

True Robert. the rain is very nice especially with our drought. I had everything outside also. the in and out shuffle is taking its toll on my back as well. I'm very thankful we didn't get all the hail and tornadoes they predicted

Well I know I have said "oh" instead of "zero" at times. :D

I hope no one gets mad at me. I promise I wasn't trying to poke fun at anyone.

I think the combination of low caffeine intake and the gloomy weather put me in a bad mood.

I think its just OH-klahoma. Since we are on the plumeria forum we could call it a Puka.

Funny thing today...I had an early morning meeting and I went into the building it was 68 and muggy. I came out two hours later and it was 47 and rain. My car was fogged up on the inside. It goes without saying I diverted past my house to put some rooting cuttings inside and not just under cover from the rain...just after saying last week they are staying on the walkway until they root or rot.

Guilty as charged ;) I do that sometimes. One that comes to mind for me is I wish people wouldn't say 'real-uh-tor' and would say 'real-tor'. There's no 'uh' in there. haha!

K, I keep getting played by the weather reports. Accuweather said there was going to be a torrential storm with hail, flash floods, tornadoes, the whole deal. I took every one of my plants inside last night. AGAIN. They got wet from the last storm we had and have been sitting in cold and wet for DAYS. Even though it didn't storm I guess it's good they didn't sit out in that. The soil is so wet in some of them I'm getting worried but with so many there's nothing I can do. You made a good call bringing your rooting cuttings inside. When I left Kyle this morning it was around 72 and muggy, by the time I got to work in Austin the temp was 57 and soon dropped to 48.

Yes, some of my pet peave words besides 'Real-uh-tor':

    Nuke-you-lar

Squarsh and Warsh: 'You need to warsh your shirt because you spilled squarsh on it'.

It also bothers me when people don't pronouce the 'ing' sound on gerund words like 'playin' (they pronounce it play-een).

But regarding 'oh', you'd be laughed off the freeway in CA if you called it 'The 4-zero-5'. LOL!

Yea mike, ice storms in April, what's that all about? Lots of things become irritating when you get that kind of weather swing..

    Robert,

Tell me about it. I have a oleander in a large pot that i sink in the ground. I had gone through the trouble of dragging it outside and had it ready to sink. Then, I saw the weather report...

    Hey Mike

A coworker of mine said that I have developed a bad attitude and need some volarian... valiran... vilarian???
When I find out what it is, I'll let you know. LOL

BTW, I think I always say "zero". :)

((If anyone gets mad or offended at you, we'll give them some, too!))

My dad used to call zero 'ott' as in 'he was born in 19 ott 6'!

405 is just a synonym for "parking lot"

E, I think they will be fine for a few days. Even if they are a bit wet. You use a fast mix. You can always insert a wick into a drain hole to help pull water out. We are so used to seeing things dry within a day of watering that your wet spell (it really hasn't been very rainy for me) doesn't seem normal or healthy.

Mis-CHEE-VEE-us. Aargh! There's no third "i" in "mischievous". It's just pronounced like "mischief us"!

Aah, you're right, Mike--that feels much better. Nothing like throwing some cold April weather on a bunch of Southerners to turn us into grammar grouches, hehe.

Now I'll be totally self-conscious about saying "oh" instead of "zero".

Allan, I thought oleander could take some frost without damaging the wood? Lots of people around here grow it in the ground and let it freeze to the ground, and then it comes back every spring.

    Moonie, it's valerian root.

Here is a link that might be useful: Valerian

Out here, the freeways are the One-Oh-One, Six-Oh-Five, Four-Oh-Five, etc. You would get very strange looks if you asked how to get to the Six-Zero-Five freeway. 8*)

    Very true DelWH.. Lol.

    Chuy.

LOL Mike, sorry I'm just as guilty when it comes to saying OH...

Generally speaking, it's just a matter of cadence. When one speaks of numbers, it makes sense to say 'oh' since most of our numeral digits (except 7) have one syllable. I live in the 4 'oh' 5 area code, I'm pretty sure my friends in Orlando read theirs as 4 'oh' 7 as well.

I only make ONE exception, though, if I'm reading an alpha-numeric sequence, I'd use zero for number 0 and 'oh' for the letter O. I'm sure everyone does that anyway, if not, then shame on you! LOL (again not an attack on anyone) :)

    Thanks for an interesting discussion.

You know what Kenny. Im pretty sure I have been guilty of saying 4 oh 5 when mentioning your area code, LOL. Shame on me Hahaha. I guess I never realize it because I dont call 4 oh 5 much since we are 918 here.

I think yesterday was a particularly picky morning for me.

    Jandy

i cant agree more. Once we get some warmth there is nothing like a late spring cold front to put us in a bad mood. I have tomato and pepper plants that would normally be in the ground by now.

Okay I decided Ill let one exception since im just as guilty of it.

If the zero falls between 2 other numbers, but only in a string of 3 numbers it shall be OK to say "Oh". Basically area codes and Highway numbers only. LOL.

Thanks for the laughs, guys. I needed it this morning!

    Moonie, maybe it's valium.

Another word: When people say 'SHER-BERT' and they're talking about sherbet. Drives me nuts.

OK, I think I need some valarian root, or maybe Valium.

valium is so last century, xanax is the drug now. Valerian root but xanax works so much better.

Oleander, hardy red can tolerate hard freezes for prolonged periods of time. A lot of others, especially the dwarfs, are much more sensitive to the cold. Thanks for the reminder, I need to put in cuttings this weekend.

I live in the south, don`t get me started on grammer! It`s not 0 or O, it`s zee-rah!

    Tally HO!

    Jandey,

Apparently certain varieties of oleander, such as the hardy red mentioned above, are rated to 7b. However, I have heard that in the OKC area it's really a roll of the dice whether or not it's going to come back out. I'm too afraid to try it.

The one that I was moving is Peppermint Sali. When I got it last year, I couldn't find any info on it at all, so I just assume that it can't take the cold. A lot of people are more accustom to taking risks than I. I play it safe and make sure to keep Peppermint Sali and Mrs. George Roeding warm.

I was just looking at photos.... I should grow some valerian. It's very pretty! It comes in a rainbow of colors, kind of like SHERBERT. :)

    Thanks for the link, Del.

    1. I have a friend who asks, "How are your pullmariums." Argh!!

    2. When people say "Bob and me went camping," or "he gave it to Bob and I." If you remove Bob you are saying "me went camping" or "he gave it to I " You then know you are wrong.

    3. Too has an extra o when you mean also or extra.

Oh and I live just off the 4-oh-5- can't be the 4 zero 5 or the four hundred five. Sorry. Fun ideas.

I grew up in the Northern Plains and we used to hear something like this:

'I just come from over ta Mitchell and we seen them cows!'

Dave, it's not just the northern plains. I swear I've heard very similar sentences here in Oklahoma, perhaps a bit less coherent.

Do you guys get "over yonder" too?

No, we never heard 'Over Yonder'.

To us that was a Southern or Hillbilly expression. LOL!

"over yonder" one of my favs.

Allan, I`ll send you all the oleanders you want! I`m fixin` to go rustlin` next week so I can start some.
    Tally HO!

    Tally,

I not sure that I could hold any more. I am quickly running out of room. In fact, i say every year that i am at complete capacity. Yet, somehow, i always end up with more plants than the year before. I suppose you can always move some things around if you find a must have.

I have grown oleander for a few years and absolutely love them, but i have only owned 3 varieties. So, i am interested to know what varieties you have and what has done best for you.
