"Why would you switch from something that worked for you?"

Well, when I bought my potting soil last fall, they were out of the cheap stuff so I bought the better stuff I thought.

What has everyone had good luck for a starting medium?

I've used Pro-Mix BX for the last 4 - 5 years and have no plans to change. I use it as a seed starting mix and a potting mix when transplanting. It was recommended by a friend of mine who is a nurseryman. There are those who don't care for it, but most likely they haven't tried it.

Anyway, it does everything I need it to do.

Either MG Organic Choice or MG Moisture Control for most of my veggies. My Nasturtiums get the $2 per cu. ft. crap (still soil & sand free) cuz they love poor soil. I usually buy a bag of Moo-Nure (hehehehe) and mix it into some of my plants soil when I transplant them to their final home.

For several I have used Pro Mix too. Both to start seeds and to grow the plants.

For starting I use 80% peat moss and 20% vermiculite. That's actually a rough guess. The vermiculite might be a bit less. I use leftover 6 or 9 plant trays from garden stores (each cell holds 1 or 2 cubic inches), and transplant to larger containers filled with potting mix when the roots are well developed (enough to hold most of the starting mix when you pop one out of the tray).

I've heard people say peat is bad for peppers, but I use peat pellets for germanation then once the first leaves are out I transfer them to a 3' peat pot filled with a 50/50 mixture of Miracle grow moisture control and black dirt from my fathers horse stalls. Works Great!
