Rotting Date Palm Trunk

My date palm has become quite soft in the middle and if touched, the wood just falls to the ground. What is happening to it? How can I save it?
It survived quite a freeze this past winter as it always does, but something is very wrong. What can I do to help it? I have had it since it was about 1 foot tall.
