2010 Lineup

My daughter just turned two years old and is now old enough to understand the whole gardening thing. She thinks its fun to dig in the pots and scoop the dirt out, water, etc. I love hot peppers, so we decided to plant a few varieties of chilis along with a couple of tomato plants and a small herb garden.

Here's the list of peppers we have planted for 2010:

Jalapeno

Cowhorn Cayenne

Yummy Sweet Mini Bell

Nu Mex Big Jim

Green Bell

Habanero

Thai Hot

We didn't have time to start from seed this year so we had to use plants instead. Next year we intend to start the peppers we will be growing from seed.

Oh and by the way, we're container gardening as opposed to sowing directly into the ground. My daughter is really excited about the plants and likes helping out with them.

Spending time with your kids in the garden on a nice day is what life is all about :-)

Anyway, hope everyone else has lots of cool stuff in the ground......or in pots! I'd love to hear what you guys are growing this year.

Just be sure to keep the 'hotties' out of her reach and don't let her see you 'pick and eat' them. My GKs don't live near me, but the neighbors' daughter is now walking and I'll have to place my container peppers where she can't get to them...don't want her to get hurt.
    This year my list is:
    Early Jalapeno
    Cayenne
    Aji Dulce 2
    Greygo(sweet)
    Elephant Ear(sweet)
    Yellow Rocoto
    Manzano Amarillo
    Chocolate Habanero
    Cheiro do Norte
    Murupi Vermelha

The last 5 I'm growing for the first time.

Definitely going to be keeping a close eye on her when we get fruit on the plants :-)

That sounds like a great selection you have!

what types of containers do you use? i'm just starting out growing peppers myself and right now have 3 long narrow plastic "troughs" from home depot. i was looking for something around the same depth but a large version...like a 3'x3' square. but haven't found anything like it.

i'd love to hear what your using? dimensions? maybe a web link?

    thanks

I use whatever I can get my hands on, LOL! The experts(of which I am not)say you need a certain minimum size, but I'm on a fixed income and can't afford tons of huge pots let alone potting mix for them all. I grow only for myself and DH so most of my containers are between 1 and 3gal(I don't expect or need huge crops), anything larger I use for my maters. I'm sure everyone is getting sick of these photos, but here's my 2009 container garden:

These little 8"x8" pots(from Dollar General) hold about 1gal of soil, the ones behind hold 1 1/2gal:

The blue pot is a trash bin also from the dollar store, that holds a couple of gallons, I think. I had two in which I grew Lemon Drop. In the 1gal black nursery pots I grew sweet cheese peppers...I got about a half dozen peppers from each plant:

I ended up removing the bark mulch because it did cause a nitrogen deficiency(as they say it will),but I was trying to keep splash-up to a minimum during our early thunder storms.

I use whatever is cheap! 3 to 5 gallon buckets, or rubbermaid type storage bins make great planters if you don't care about looks.

thanks guys! rubbermade is actually a great idea i was trying to think where i've seen big plastic containers like that. so i notice you have at most 2 plants per pot. right now i have about 4-6 in these narrow, not very deep planter boxes...do you see a problem with them being to close and not deep enough for roots. i probably need to take a pic

Congratulations on the upcoming new addition to the family! Our second little girl was born on Jan. 25th. We try to get them out in the fresh air and be active with them as much as possible.

Your list looks great! Good luck with them!
