IT depends on what was used in the compost. but in general many people grow directly in the compost pile. 100% compost is usually the best. the reason for mixing it down is that very few people have enough compost.

what I like to do is have the plants in pots and have the roots grow down into the soil. then when the freeze comes I rip up the pot and bring it in over night. then put it back out. the pot usually needs more water because it lost roots. but the plant can usually go an extra month alive. bringing it in when it is too cold at night.

Banana peel is for nitrogren I believe.

Throw in some crushed egg shells too for calcium. Really smash the crap out of the shells. I use a big round rock and grind them inside a plastic bag.

The banana peel is for postasium ( Same as banana a good potasium source for humans)

The main reason for not using 100% compost in outdoor pots is anchoring your plants in case of a strong wind.
