Rot and outside plummies

I am wondering why plummies that are planted outside don't rot. I have two that are planted outside, I have a friend who has numerous plummies planted outside, and I know of an area close to here where a lot of people have them planted outside. Now, when it's planted in a pot, and one overwaters, one gets rot. So, when it pours down rain every day for days on end, why don't the ones that are planted outside rot?
