Starting Onions...

I was planning on starting onions from seed this year in late December. Well, it seems that December has come quicker than I thought.

My plan was to start the seeds in the unheated utility room under grow lights until I could get them into the ground at the right time. The temperature outside this morning was 29 degrees or so and the temp inside the utility room was around 50-55 degrees.

Is that warm enough to start onions in? I know that the seeds will germinate faster in a warmer environment, so if I germinate them indoors and then move them out to the utility room, would that be better, or would it be too much of a shock for the tiny seedlings?

Am I right to be starting them this early? I read that the earlier start you can give them the better, but is late December too early?
