trachycarpus fortunei

I got a trachy this past spring - it is about 7' tall - am interested in overwintering it in Michigan (Detroit area. I have seen various tips on the subject. My question is - can a trachy be overwintered on its side and buried in mulch, including the fronds? Or is it best left upright and mulched. Mine is in a large pot - too big to bring indoors - or I would take that option. Either way, I will bury the pot, then mulch the earth (upright or on its side). Any thoughts - advantages/disadvantages?

Thank you.
