Repotting and Root Pruning

Greetings...

I have a jalapeno/habanero cross that I started from seed last year... the only survivor from 9 seedlings. I overwintered it last winter outside. I live in Sacramento and the winters aren't too bad here, so I thought it would be fine outside. It survived the winter, but I thought I was going to lose it this spring... it looked really bad. After months of care, it has come back and is doing great. This winter I'm going to bring it inside. I do have a couple of questions. Since it's still in the soil that I put in in last year, I'd like to repot it in fresh soil after the season is over. I'd like to put in something a bit smaller to bring in for the winter and then repot it again in the spring. Since I'm not really looking for any pepper production over the winter, I'm assuming putting it in a smaller pot would be ok (?) Would pruning the root system be alright as well?

Thanks in advance,

Bruce
