I have two books by Jennifer Bartley - Designing the New American Kitchen Garden - and the book she did after that one, a handbook. The handbook (can't remember the exact title) is great, facts/advice about vegetables and herbs
and fruits, planting, cooking, even recipes. I'm sure you'd like it. Enjoy!

I like The Edible French Garden, by Rosalind Creasy, and In the French Kitchen Garden, by Georgeanne Brennan. The latter has a really neat way of showing gardens through the seasons, with rough drawings and suggestions on what sorts of vegetables to plant when. She emphasizes that the idea of a potager is to have something available at all seasons, rather than to have surpluses that you freeze or store for the winter.

I took this book out of the library after hearing Ken Druse's interview of the author and loved it so much I bought it. Many of the garden designs are quite inspirational. But what I really love is the recipes which follow the seasonality of the vegetable garden. I tried about 10 of the recipes last summer and each one was a hit with my small children and my husband. I highly recommend it.
