Hey, Carrie, I'm going to take a more positive approach to your question. But first, I think we need a little more information.

How long ago were the tree branches burned? Do you know for sure that the grass that was there is really dead? If it was a fairly recent burn, then the grass may yet pop back and will need to be dealt with.

When you say "other than grass" do you mean other than lawn grass, or would prairie grasses be acceptable?

When you say "low maintenance" do you mean (multiple choice question):

a.) I'll never lift a finger there ever, ever again.
b.) I will take the time to weed and water occassionally as needed.
c.) Anthing's better than mowing this @#*% lawn every week.

We have a good sized yard and I keep adding things to do it seems.
We had dead, fallen fruit trees on the side of the property that were too heavy to move. I burned them in place.
I'm not sure if the grass is dead or not. This was just last week.
I can't see this area from the house and I grow alot of vegetables and flowers so was thinking of doing something low maintanance( a bit of planting watering etc)
I am new to praire wildflower ideas but do have a perennial patch in the back yard.

My guess is that the grass isn't totally dead, and other weedy species may pop up there now that you've knocked back the grass a bit. Before you plant anything new, you want to make sure you have the old grass and weeds under control. Otherwise, you'll have a lot of work ahead of you and you will not be happy with your results.

Rather than reinventing the wheel, I'm going to point you to a website that has a lot of good, basic info on how to establish a prairie planting. Read through this website, especially the section on site preparation.

Good luck! You will need to do a little bit of work up front, but I think you will be happy with the results in the long run.
