I just got a rough-cut trailmower to tow behind my ATV - maximum height is 6 inches. It works great.

In the past I just used a 60" finish mower with the deck raised high behind my 8N tractor, mowing even tall golden rod in several passes. Not the safest practice, and it tends to leave heavy windrows, but it sorta works in a pinch to knock down weeds. Oh, by the way, soon after doing this the last time, my tractor transmission locked up tight and I had it hauled off. Coincidence?

I've ordered a flail mower for my new tractor. Supposedly they don't leave windrows, don't throw rocks as a rotary cutter will do, and they also do a good job of mulching the clippings. We'll see .... it was expensive!

We burned this year, for the first time since planting in '98. That has produced dramatically better results than any mowing. Weeds are down in the burned areas, and grass there is very green and thick.

We hope to burn next late winter and are creating wide grass zones on all sides. In the meantime, since we don't want to spend more money on equipment at this point, we will continue to mow with our DR brush mower, and with whatever mower our neighbor pulls behind his tractor-he does it once a year for us in exchange for using our barns to store equipment. I will ask him to set it at the higher setting, if possible.
