My mom has grown both. Regular (onion) chives are easy to grow but can spread very quickly in the garden. Garlic chives do not spread as fast. She likes both of them for cooking :)

I have the opposite experience. My garlic chives tend to expand fairly quickly. I don't use them near as often as regular chives.

Is there such a thing as "regular" chives, not onion nor garlic? That would be better. I'll have to look around.

Julie, by "regular" I was referring to onion chives. Chives are generally referred to as chives or garlic chives. The onion part is understood.

I actually have both, but tend to use regular chives more. The garlic chives have a flat leaf and bloom white flowers later in the summer.

I only had grown chives in pots before. Now that they're in my garden, they've grown much taller and wider than expected.

I love the look of society garlic, but actually had to eliminate almost all of it to maintain control. It took over a whole bed in two or three seasons! Onion chives do spread, but seem easier to control here in my SE MI garden.
