flower envy! why are mine so slow?

I've been patiently waiting for my black eyed susans, purple coneflowers and blanketflowers to bloom but only the blanketflowers are close. Yet around town and in nurseriess I see others already in bloom. How can they get theirs going so soon? I don't fertilize because I thought these types of flowers didn't need it. Could it just be more heat in the city? We are out in the country a bit.
