This is likely to work only if you are broadcasting the seeds on to bare soil. Scattering seeds over dead winter vegetation doesn't work well. Too many seeds fail to get into the soil.

But this "frost seeding" (as it's called) really works well on bare ground. November is the best month, but seedings in December and January can work.

If possible, the process works even better if the plot can be driven over with tractor wheels to press the seeds into the top 1mm.

You can also wait till the snow covers your bare ground and broadcast on top of the snow. I have never had the birds bother with the seed and they recieve the treatment ma nature intended them to have. I always get great germination this way.
