Well, we just had a 6' fence installed, and they tried to put a 4' gate on it. WOW, that looked HORRIBLE!
Are you wanting to keep something out of the garden that jumps, like deer? Or can climb a short distance like a raccoon. If so, I'd say go for 6'

We have a 42-inches high picket fence around our yard and down one side of our potager, and the gate is exactly the same height as the fence. I can't imagine it any other way, for aesthetic reasons.

However, you have a taller fence. Is it solid, or can you see through it into the potager? If you can't see through it a shorter gate might be good to give you that view in (and out!). Or, if wildlife (deer) could get over the shorter gate, you will have to stay with a 6' one.

Generally, I would choose to have a gate the same size as the fence.

My fence is wire mesh covered with black vinyl and natural wood posts. I was going to make the gate out of 2x3s and line it with chicken wire. The original 4' gate besides being very rickety does look pretty out of scale.

We built the 6' to keep deer out. (ha, I didn't bury it because I didn't want to lose any height and wouldn't ya know, I had a rabbit or a groundhog dig under and eat all my lettuce. You just can't win sometimes.) I sprayed with that stinky liquid fence stuff until I can attach and bury some chicken wire.
