Right after I posted I looked some more and found it in my Peterson guide. It is narrow leaved Puccoon. But please feel free to still give me any personal experience you've had with it! (sheepishly) Aniya

what is the latin name of the narrow leaved variety ... i am familar with hoary puccoon(lithospermum canescens) and fringed puccoon ...

so what do you want to know ?
i know they are kind of rare - at least in our area - they have deep tap root - so probably dont transplant well - i havent tried to collect any - so i dont know how easily it is for them to start from seed. the spots that i know of where they are there - there is only one or two plants so i dont want to disturb them ....
others may have more experience with them than mine - my spots are spring bloomers - but i have seen them bloom in other areas later in august -

Narrow-leaved Puccoon is one of the common names for Lithospermum incisum. It's more commonly called Fringed Puccoon.

It seems very unlikely that the plant you are trying to identify is a Puccoon. The seed is very hard to come by. I have never heard of it being included in a wildflower mix, even from a native plant nursery. The flower is yellow rather than orange (as depicted in joepyeweed's pic).

If you could post a pic of your wildflower, perhaps someone here could assist on the ID.

that's pretty popular in seed mixes. a wallflower. i think siberian is the most common one.

and ive seen puccoons show up after a 'meadow' type of management is introduced. i agree u prolly didnt get it in a seed mix.

Hoary can get quite orange in my part of the world.

if you noticed the pic that i posted is on their website too...they have a few of my photos posted...

I am a little embarassed to have to keep correcting myself but on further research I am quite certain that it is a hoary puccoon. The narrow leaved is definitely too yellow. A friend of mine who works at a Nature Conservancy program in our county said that they have puccoon on their acreage so hopefully it likes growing around here. Thank you all for your comments.

u havnt said where u have found it so let me guess the site location.

forest edge area. lighter soils. south exposure. that is typical of where hoary shows its beautiful heads up. and i think that the dryer the location is, the oranger the puccoon is ( or maybe that is just my imagination).

and congrat's on the puccoon. nice plants to have.
