They might just be doing dormant for the year.

This species also resents having its tap root damaged.

I grow Asclepias tuberosa and also Asclepias incarnata, every year, from seed collected at our yard. I generally transplant these seedlings in June, when they are 6 inches high. The survival rate is pretty good, this year it was 75 per cent. Attempts to transplant mature plants are not generally successful, according to reports I have read.

A. tuberosa does best in a sunny spot, and should be watered in thoroughly when it is transplanted. However, it should not be routinely watered after that, unless the soil is dry and the plant appears stressed. This plant will not do well in a low spot, where rainwater accumulates. However, Asclepias incarnata, swamp milkweed, would likely do well in such a location.

i have no idea what is wrong with your tuberosa... it may be going dormant - i think you can just wait and see if it comes back next year - have you watered it plenty - i think new transplants cannot be watered enough... especially in well drained soil... even though tuberosa likes well drained soil - i would still water it alot when trying to get it established....
