Keep them out of the rain, and be patient. I use a spray bottle every couple of days and spray the tips.

I don't have a problem with rooting them deep, I just don't water them. I find that they do better if you leave them alone, and don't let them get too wet.

Smaller cuttings also have a higher probability of not making it.

Looks like you are trying to root them together in one pot. That's fine.. We call that " gang rooting". I would plant them deeper so they are stable in the mix.. The problem with gang rooting in a container is that you can't see through the container to see if roots are forming. That is the problem ( as you have mentioned! ;-) some have the tendency to want to check for roots. This is a big no, no!! You have to leave them alone.. They can take up to six to eight weeks. You have to leave them alone. Period. No peeking. It's hard, but this is needed. Shhhhh, mentioned to keep them from to much water. That is so true!!!

Andrew mentioned about Starbucks cups.. I also use these as well. Cut skits in the bottom so you will have drainage . I also like to give an initial watering at first...

Read up on callusing.

Root in a light mix.. You can add perlite to a cactus mix and that will be fine.

Patience is the key. Plant them , protect them from water ( rain). And fine something else to do for a while until you see leaves form . About 6-8 inches, then lightly water. You can mist if you feel it necessary ..

Maybe find some seeds to sow to make the time go by. Maybe someone can send you seeds while you are rooting your cuttings. I see you have some great cuttings.. So be patient. That's the best advice I can give to you!!

No dumping the container and pulling out the stems... It will set them back. Then you will get frustrated. If you concentrate on leaving them alone, you will be way ahead of the game!!!
