If you're talking about vanilla extract the answer is yes. McCormick Spices is not too far from me. The light rail goes right past them and there is always a smell of peppercorns in the air. They started in a cellar with a boss and three employees.

If you are talking about the actual bean then I don't think there are commercial growers here. If you google how to grow you can read lots of info on getting started. Looks like it would be very expensive here due to needing greenhouses and lots of patience. Maybe worth checking into though..

I was in a store the other day and could not believe how much they wanted for 1 vanilla bean. Have you had any success in finding a grower in the US? I was interested in starting an Orchid tissue culture bussness but if vanilla can be grown here I might like to try that.

Vanilla needs hot, humid tropical conditions to grow, flower and fruit, and is slow to do so outside of the tropics, in a greenhouse situation. You can probably find sources for live plants, but would need a heated greenhouse year round. It may be grown commercially in Hawaii or Puerto Rico, but labor costs here would tend to make it noncompetitive price wise with vanilla beans grown in Asia/Africa/Madagascar. I know it is a commercial crop in Sri Lanka, where I took a tour of a commercial farm that grew it.
