It depends on what type of conifers. Some conifers are actually very very very easy to grow from cuttings. Basically you could just stick them in a pot with potting mix and they are likely to grow. Use some rooting hormone and your chances are even better. Some are next to impossible to grow from cuttings. Some are in between. Step one would be to determine which species of conifer you want to grow.

You might also want to check out the Conifer Forum here on GardenWeb. I'll bet you'll be able to find posts about growing multiple types of conifers from cuttings on that forum. And/or better define what you are trying to do and maybe we can also give you more advice here.

Thanks brandon. I'm not trying anything exotic or rare, just experimenting really. I have a really nice Moonglow Juniper with a great shape and color that I would like to try. I also have a nice, full Fraser fir and a concolor fir that I would like to try.

The plants can easily be purchased at a nursery, but I would like to try and see if I can grow a few of them via cuttings.

I've read that many conifers like pines, spruces and firs are very difficult so I have not attempted them.

The Juniperus scopulorum 'Moonglow' is probably bordering on difficult, but is do-able from cuttings. The Abies fraseri falls somewhere in the middle of the difficulty range (not easy, but do-able). The Abies concolor is supposed to be fairly difficult to grow from cuttings. I don't think I would even mess with that one. The juniper and Fraser fir will almost certainly need rooting hormone for much success.

brandon, thanks for the reply. Well it sounds like the chances of growing these via cuttings would be a real challenge with a low probability of success.

I was hoping for different news, but from your post and few other websites I've been reading it's probably going to be difficult at best.
