I would suggest a pot between 4 and 6 inches of potting soil. Make a hole with your fingers large enough for the roots. Put the roots in the hole and firm the soil over the roots. Water well and allow the pot to drain. Keep the pot in the house in bright light until after the last frost. Al

I have the sprouting avacado in a 6 inch pot with soil upto, but not covering the top of the pit. I read somewhere that it was bad to cover the pit completely. I also heard to keep the soil moist until the sprout has established itself to a decent height.

And also, once the sprout has started to grow, I have heard that you need to pinch off the new leaves in order to make the plant "bushy". ABout how long should I be doing this for? and if the plant is just young, will this hurt it at all?

My avacado which I started about 3 months age is now a healthy tree about 2' tall. I noticed that the exposed part of the seed is shrinking and is becomming part of the plant. I pinched it back a lot at first, but have held off for awhile. Good luck with yours.

Avocado is a tree not a bush. I would not pinch it. It will grow it's own side branches with time. Mine is three years old and about 4 1/2 feet tall. I am in zone 5b so it comes inside in the winter which slows it down.
In the summer I harden it off to direct sunlight. It does wonderful.
This tree in its native habitat can grow a good 60 feet tall.

You did right by not planting the seed completely under the soil. It will disappear with time.

I started my avocado about a month and a half to 2 months ago using the glass and toothpick method. My pit split...and that's about it. (I'm a poet as well!)

Should I keep this up or just declare my pit dead?
