I usually use semi-ripe cuttings, and I am not sure what luck you would have with the shoots. You could take several cuttings this summer and root them to save for next year.

This is a very easy plant to root. Try it with a shoot or two.

Exactly how do you root one that is full grown & blooming?
I had 4 but our drought is slowing trying to kill them off even though I water about 1/2" twice a week. I have one plant left that is healthy!

I read you can dig up the roots (tubers) and store in basement until spring. I never tried, I think this was in Fine Gardening magazine, or some gardening magazine. I don't know....

I last bought salvia guaranitica more than 5 years ago...every fall I dig up the tubers after first frost, & store in giant zip lock bags in our unheated garage. They are way up on shelving units, so it may be a bit warmer up there than at floor level. Usually start resprouting in Feb or so. Often I find seedlings out in the beds, take those in as well and I must have over a dozen large clumps by now. This is so easy. I have done this with pineapple sage & Mexican sage, although not always with good results. Good luck!

Salvia guaranitica is not one Ive had great success with propagating in any manner untill this. As with the previous poster I find that using the tubers or rhizomes might be the best way to do it. Perhaps putting them in a plastic bag of potting soil for dormancy might be the best way. But I have already dug up rhizomes of argentine skies, black and blue and blue ensign. I might be sorry for doing this so early but I just wanted to try.
