Yes...I have heard that this is quite common. The roots will form from the calloused area. Just keep the moss damp, not soggy, and you'll probably have a nice set of roots come fall. It might not hurt to dab a little rooting hormone either.

Just remember that after you remove the bark, scrape the green layer away or it wont work. I prefer dip n grow and have been able to layer a few plants that people told me were not possible.

How long do you have to keep the item wrapped.... Weeks, Months.. and how large of an area of bark do you remove??

I am reading up on this sort of thing to, i plan on trying with a very nice bonsai type limb from a bald cypress. It will be on the lower branches, and i was wondering if it is a hardwood stem, about 2 inches in diameter air layering would be the best bet, correct. Another thing what time of the year would be best to fit it on, during the winter when it is dormant, or right before the summer starts? I will continue reading for it on my own, but the internet is becomming a place more of random info, and less organized for me to rely on. Does anyone know about AIR LAYERING of BALD CYPRESS, time of year, method, etc. much appreciated.
