Plumerias galore!

I made it to my first PSA Show and Sale last weekend, well, really my first plumeria sale of any kind. Before this all I've ever had to choose from in person were a few here and there at various garden centers, all of the NOID type.

You can imagine how thrilled I was when I saw this:

And this:

And this:

And this:

If that wasn't enough, there was the official blooms table:

And a few choice ones in close-up, like Tidadoi:

And Iris Sunset, a very hard-to-find variety:

Wish my camera took better indoor photos of those blooms; they were all incredible, though as the signs said, they were smaller than usual due to the intense heat in Houston this year. Of course, they were also more richly-colored, too.

This is my shopping basket when all was said and done:

Believe it or not, only half of those were for me. Seriously.

A beautiful display of blooms from Plumeria Acres, too:

That's it. I was so busy plumeria hunting I didn't take many photos. It was a blast and the people were wonderful!

Jen,Thanks for posting those wonderful pictures! Did it seem like you were in heaven? It is sooo difficult to choose just a few when you see them displayed like that. Which varieties did you buy?
We will have the same type of show and sale in San Diego on Sept. 3+4. I'm counting the days. Let's see what I'll come home with...
    Have a wonderful day,

Beautiful photos Jen. Like Iso, I thought of Plumeria Heaven.

I'm currently waiting on my gifted plumeria cuttings to dry out before trying to plant them. Hopefully I will be here in a year posting photos of some healthy plants.

I haven't had any luck with plumeria in the past, but I didn't have this board then and looking back, my instincts were way off. Poor plumeria plants.

I too am interested in what you picked up. Fill us in!

Jen great shots! I wish I could read more of the labels! You could have done closeups at each table and I'd look at each photo!

    What were the prices like??

OMG Jen!!! Wish I was there! You must be feeling like a kid in a candy store! Thank you for posting those pictures!
What varieties were in that basket?
Like Iso said, we'll have a similar kind of sale in a couple weeks and I hope I can make it. Last year when I went, I only had 2 months of plumeria experience under my belt so I didn't pick the right plumies, but this year I hope to do better (now that I'm clear about what I want :-)

Thanks, everyone! It was so much better than I expected. Iso, I've seen photos of that San Diego show and you, too, will be in heaven!

Laura, you reminded me to take a shopping bag, so I did, expecting to see mostly cuttings. Imagine how giddy I was when I saw all the rooted plants and shopping carts to haul them around in! In fact, there were only a few cuttings even offered. That's why I didn't take more close-ups because we were lined up behind the shopping carts waiting to start and I wasn't going to lose a minute getting to those beautiful plants for sale, many with inflos on.

The basket has Moragne 23, Wildfire, Elizabeth Thornton's Maverick, and CPX-25 for my plumie friend, plus Dazzler, JL Red Orange, Maverick and California Sally for me. I rushed through first to try to find the most desirable ones, then went through a second time to pick up the second round picks, then a third time to make sure I didn't miss anything, then again to stop and do some serious plumeria chatting. They all started laughing at me as I cruised by repeatedly, but everyone was so lovely and obviously enjoying the show.

Dave, the pricing was pretty good, obviously a bit higher for harder-to-find ones; most ran $20-$45 for 10-20" well-rooted plants, many with multiple tips. Then there were very rare ones going for upwards of $100. There were some grand bargains, too, like a big 6-foot-tall Candy Stripe with many branches for $75.

I promise to take more close-up photos of the official blooms table next time. Here's another close-up shot, but the camera didn't focus well in the indoor lighting:

I'm kind of annoyed at myself for not being more thorough now, but I was a bit plumeria-drunk by the end, LOL! They were so stunning in person that it was overwhelming. If anyone would like to go with me next year, let me know!

Jen, what is the one to the right of the Kimi Moragne on the table in that last photo? ? Can you remember? I'm craning to try to read all the labels! LOL!

I see now that I must have a 'My Valentine' for my next aquisition. Good thing I was not there.

I can live vicariously thru your experience. Hah!

OMG how can you pick??? I would have run out of money quick, probably at the first table. I guess you'd just have to make a list and stick to it. I'd be pushing one cart and pulling another. I'd have to send someone else in to buy them for me. I'm kind of glad I live cross country. :) Peg

Now that is a dangerous place.

Too right Bill! I keep being reminded by my husband, subtly that I have plenty of plumerias, and no room for more! Specially with all rooted plants!

Jen, lucky you, I am jealous. I keep debating going to the San Diego show. It is a long drive each way, and an expensive trip to boot! Imay just live vicariously through Jen's pictures! Great job!

If anyone has a display of the flowers, like they had here, pictures would be awesome! Jennifer

Jen, you and your friend sure ended up with some great plants - congratulations!

Last year's sale in San Diego was my first one and I have to agree with everyone here: I was totally overwhelmed and dazed by the sheer number of cultivars available (over 200). I think I made the rounds three times trying to educate myself (basically no prior knowledge) and choose a few plants. In the meantime, all those wonderful plants that were big and blooming got picked up by experienced plumoholics who knew exactly what they wanted. I almost left empty handed, but ended up with a young Guillot's Sunset. This year I will check out the list of cultivars the SD Plumeria Society publishes on their website prior to the sale.

Sunseeker, if you can make it to this year's sale in SD, we should all try to meet up!

Have a great day everyone - they are promising sunshine for today, but so far all we got was pretty dense fog!

Dave, this will blow your mind, but the flower to the right of Kimi in that last photo is...Mardi Gras! That's what heat will do to it. Right behind Kimi is Kona Hybrid, left is JL Trumpet and behind to the left is Kaneohe Sunburst. They were in alphabetical order. Directly behind Mardi Gras is a big beautiful seedling of Mardi Gras called Marci Diane, which I don't think has been released yet. Right of Marci Diane in the top photo is Mary Moragne, which is much prettier in person than photos, and in front of MM is My Valentine, which is bigger than you'd think. I forgot to smell MV, which I hear smells terrific. Mine is growing very slowly but I liked that it lost almost no leaves over winter here.

Peg, I laughed so hard at the image of you pushing one cart and pulling another! It was hard to resist so many plants--had to keep reminding myself that they'll get bigger--but it helped that I was shopping for someone else, too! Funny, at one point I looked up to get my cart and found someone had walked off with it. I ran after her--she'd taken mine by mistake because she, too, was in a plumeria trance--because I had snagged the only two Mavericks in the whole show and didn't want to lose them.

Jennifer, I was on the road at 6am since it's about a 150 mile drive for me, and I'm trying not to tally up the total cost including the gas and the new pots I bought while I waited for the show to start. It was totally worth it!

OK, another one to add to my list ... 'Mardi Gras'. thanks Jen! I think we'd have the summer heat here to bring out color too.

And that 'Kaneohe Sunburst' color is so dark! Wow!

It was very good marketing to have all the flowers displayed so nicely and well marked.

Hi, I was wondering where this show was located? Also after looking at the pictures it looks to me like they are all either grown in a greenhouse or some sort of shade structure. I like growing my outside in full sun. I think these would need be acclimated prior to placing them is full sun. Well thanks for the pictures.

    Jen,

I wish I had know you were there. I was helping my sister sell at the show and picked up some for myself too!!! There were so many awesome plumerias for sale and some at great prices. I finally got a Raspberry Sundae for $45.00. And to answer Mike, I've seen some of these people's yards and these are grown outside in their yards, not greenhouses. Some they have to put in partial shade as the sun will sunburn them but for the most part they are out in our Texas sun. It was a great experience being there and seeing the happy faces on the people as they carted out their plants. I also came home with a California Sally, Red-Orange, Japanese Lantern, and Keneohe Sunrise. It was very, very hard to resist buying more but there is always next time!

Joan, I definitely would have come by to say hello--maybe I talked to you and didn't know it! Can you say which booth letter you had? You have good taste in plants. The Kaneohe was so tempting, especially as Emerson had them blooming, but I couldn't justify yet another dark pink/red.

Mike, like Joan said I believe most growers here in Texas keep them outside except in winter. Mine live around my garden beds in full sun or partial sun under big oak trees. Those in full sun do scorch but those under oaks look just as good as those being sold at shows. They're very forgiving of our heat as long as the sunlight's not too direct in summer.

I wanted to be there, but had other obligations.
Plus, the 4 hour drive from DFW area.

WOW! Man, I wish I could be there! I love plumerias! I have two plumerias right now. One with roots and one cutting. Were they expencive? Im not sure if my local nusery has plumerias. I know Home Depot has them sometimes.

    Hi Jen,
can you email me? I tried to email you but you don't have it available.

I wanted to see if maybe you knew anyone else that carried this variety.

    Thanks,
    Andrew

Thanks for sharing all your pictures. My neighbor sells plumeries pretty reasonable. I only recently decided that I would like to try one plant. But he doesn't have any dwarfs and that is what I wanted to start with.
Love getting to see all the bloom colors.

There are two Houston PSA Shows/Sales every year. Come to the one in June, south of Houston in Clear Lake---tie in a mini vacation down on Galveston!!! And while you are shopping at the Sale---let the family tour NASA (Mission Control, astronaut training, etc)...less than a mile down the street on NASA Rd 1!!! Also, the Kemah Boardwalk is down the other way less than a mile away for excellent seafood & entertainment on the water!!! The June PSA Sale is fantastic & it is during the first leg of summer!!! P.S. The shopping carts are SOP down here! You download the list of plumies that will be on sale & at which tables a couple days before the sale, draft a Wish List... then shop till you drop!!!! PSA Sales are the best!!!!!! :))) Thanks for posting the pics!!!!!

    Laura, I'm 99% sure that's Theresa Wilder.

From left to right on the back row: Theresa Wilder, Guillot's Sunset, Gulfstream, Pudica (which is clearly mislabeled as a red bloom is in the bud vase), Texas Sunshine, the big purplish inflo is Lake's Passion, Candy Stripe, Scott Pratt (I think), and then maybe Fruit Salad. The one directly in front of Lake's Passion is Magnum Opus.

Maybe next year I'll drag hubby along as my photographer, that way I can focus on hunting!
