Grafting a Red Japanese Maple cutting.

Would it work if I grafted a Red Japanese maple cutting onto the roots of a sugar maple. In other words would it work if I took a soft wood cutting from a certain maple tree and graft it to the roots of another type of maple tree, would it still grow?

As Ken points out - no it would not work
Acer palmatium rootsock is needed for most Japanese Maple grafting.
Sugar Maple is Acer saccharan ( sp) and will not be compatible.
Propagation of japanes maples is not very easy.
Under PERFECT conditions cuttings may work, Grafting will get better results, but even with years of practice, greenhouse, heatpads and humidifer, I still only have about 50% sucess rate.
