Dealing with Brokers

Being a Cacti and succulent grower and nursery I have not had to really deal with brokers. However as my nursery has grown there are plugs and liners of alpine succulents that some of the perennial plug growerÂs offer, that I would love to stop growing from seed... cacti take very different germination techniques and I am just not really set up to germinate Lewisia in my refrigerator.... However the grower I was looking at (Henry's) only sells through brokers. Has any one used them and if so do you have a broker recommendation? The last broker I talked to just didn't want to deal with me because I was only looking for the minimums and will never need huge orders from them, as they donÂt offer that many plants I can use.

I deal with Henry's regularly, but because they are just down the road and they do business with local retailers without need of a broker, I've not had to jump that hurdle. And I deal in finished containers, not plugs.

They are a pretty small operation, all things considered, so using a broker no doubt streamlines things like billing and shipping for them. If you don't have a broker you typically use, Henry's will recommend one. I will say the quality of their plants is excellent - they grow some of the best looking heucheras I can get my hands on.

Hi Hap,

If it's Henry's Plant Farm in Wa, I see they use Germania as one of their brokers. I highly recommend Germania, I have had excellent service from them.

Germania is going to require a minimum, which is around $150.00, I think, and if you don't meet the minimum you pay an extra $20.00 or so.

Thank you for the feedback.

I will give Germania a call. I can meet the minimums per order. It is just the first broker I contacted was very uninterested in working with me "since all they would get was the one order a year...". They were so snide about it I wonder how they stay in business.

I agree. It's one company I've done business with for years, and as they've grown, they haven't let it go to their heads. They've treated me with the same good service for large and small orders. BTW, there are some larger brokers who have evolved a special branch of their business into dealing with the smaller grower. Sometimes one has to kiss a lot of frogs before they find their prince, and it's that way with brokers. When you finally find a good one, they can usually be more influential with their vendors because of their clout.

im lookin 4 some brokers myself, but i hav found a good website, that lists alot im sorting thru that list now, i will let u no what i get. if u want 2 do urself, go 2 wuraweb.com. and i typed in horticulture brokers, and garden brokers, AND i just typed in brokers, but did a category search in landscape(gave me most results). alright, hope everything ends well.
