leaves dying on curly willow cutting

I wanted to propagate some hydrangea. I thought everything was suppose to propagate more easily with a willow cutting. So I put some willow cuttings in with hydrangea cuttings in a vase of water. The hydrangea cuttings look fine after a week. But the curly willow cuttings keep losing their leaves---I have been through 2 sets of cuttings.

I have always made cuttings in the spring before to great success and wondered if the leaf drop was due to it being summer.

MYSTERY FLOWERS
I planted some seed from a tall, 4' high, Asiatic Lilly about 3 years ago and this is what I got. Looking at the leaves you would think it is an Iris, but Irises produce leaves from the base. This produced leaves from a main stem. Irises have a cone, this has a root system. Irises bloom in early Spring. This thing is blooming in late August. Irises have a single large bloom. This has many small Orchid type blooms. I was told that they are Iris Domestacas , common name tiger lily, or black berry lily. WHAT HAPPENED???
