Has anybody got any advise on propagating this beatiful climber? I took some softwood cuttings from sideshoots of the main stem 25 cm long on bottom heat and they had died within 3 days. The biggest disaster of the year !
I haven't tried to propagate mine, but people I've talked to say they have had limited success layering rangoon creeper but absolutely no success with cuttings of any kind.
I have tried to root this plant from cuttings for four years. I have only heard of people being able to root it by ground layering it so that is what I am trying now.
Do tell, do tell. So far I get huge calus but no root. It has been suggested I'm using cuttings that are too soft. Out of about 150 cuttings I have one with roots and it has no top growth. Thanks
I sowed a couple of fruits in a pot. I used the the entire fruit, with its 5 burgundy/green wings, while still fresh and fleshy on the plant. A few weeks later, one had germinated. I couldn't keep the plantule and check its development though, because this 'experiment' took place while I was on travel (in East Africa). It is not seeds you'll find in the fruit, but a kind of viviparous embryo; and this is why dry fruits on a plant would not germinate. You would expect the rooting tip of the embryo to be placed on the side where the fruit is attached; however it seems that it is on the opposite side... so that when the vining fruit-bearing branch bends and touches the soil, the embryo finds itself in an appropriate upright position (ie roots down & leaf tip up).
