Looks like Aeonium arboreum v. artopurpureum. But I am definitely no succulent ID expert.

In any event, NO rooting powder or compost is needed. In fact, those might make it even less likely to root well. Also, definitely DO NOT try to root in standing water. Succulents frequently rot if left in water.

The best way to root them would be to allow the cuts to callus over (which they have surely done by now) and then place them in a well draining potting mix (like a cactus mix or a normal good quality potting mix mixed with about half as much perlite). Water when planted in then sparingly until you see signs of foliage growth. Generally succulents (including Aeoniums) are very easy to root.

I totally agree with brandon - you just stick the ends in potting soil, give it a good drench and make sure the soil is well drained and then just be patient.

Succulents are some of the easiest to propagate via cutting and before you know it you should have a similar garden!

Carolyn, by compost are you referring to what we would call potting mix here? Seems I've come across that difference before....

I have notes of seed sowing instructions for using John Innes Compost - it's our same potting soil, or potting medium :)

Carolyn - Aeonium arboreum is half hardy in the UK. It needs a VERY well drained sunny position and can just about survive outdoors all year in some areas in the South. There are some in a garden near me (SW UK) along with Agave americana which survived last winter. But they are facing South on a steep gritty slope. But if you are in Manchester it's probably rather iffy. It is a good candidate for a nice-looking pot which can go outside during the summer. Keep it pretty dry and cool but above about 5c during the winter. A bright conservatory or porch would be perfect. Then get it outside as soon as possible in the spring but check that it never sits in soggy compost.
