When to collect scion wood

I cut down a butternut tree because it got too big and messy near the house then regretted not saving scions to graft on to a black walnut so I would still get both nuts. This was done two weeks ago before the tree was fully dormant. Now that we had a light frost last night and trees are going dormant can I go get scion wood off the butternut where I dumped it in the woods? Will it sprout when grafted next spring? I checked a twig yesterday by cutting into it and it was still quite green.

Bill I don't believe it will work. I would grab some butternut scions off another tree or order some from http://nuttrees.net/

Thank you for the link to nuttrees.net which was unknown to me. I may want to use them in the future. I had thought of getting Butternut scion wood from trees in our township park and went to check on them last week. The township had cut them down to make a baseball field. Happy ending: while perusing the Butternut stump in my yard I noticed an eight inch twig with buds that was left there unknowingly. It should grow quickly in the spring and produce what I need.
