The black part is dead & should be removed.If there are some nodes left then burry one or two. Keep soil damp & may root & produce a new plant.....

Your chances of roots growing are increased if the bottom of the cutting is very close to a node, this black dead area does not show any nodes. Be sure your mix is very porous containing lots of air. Cutting losses will be higher if started in very hot weather. Al

no nodes.........lol the rose bush was my first attempt at propagation. i dont guess i stuck it deep enough and also rookie issues...... lol

Propagating Roses is a great way to practice propagation from stem cuttings. It can also be very rewarding when done properly. As Al and George have said, such stem cuttings should be rooted in a well-draining soil; this reduces the chance of rot.

Anther very useful item when doing vegetation propagation is a heat-mat. It is an small investment that can go a very long way (Especially if you want to go 'hog wild')! Slightly warming the base of the pots in which you are propagating will greatly increase root development, this is especially true when propagating most bushes.
