I admit to now knowing a lot of the science behind propagation. I grow African Violets and am always amazed that it works. Sometimes, though, the leaves are more fragile than others - usually thinner as if they have less internal stores to keep them until they root. These leaves, especially if shipped to you, have a much higher failure rate.

I've increased the success rate dramatically by soaking the leaves initially, potting them, and if they quickly start to get limp, I put the petiole in water, as if water rooting. Prior to roots forming, but after the leaf has perked up, I repot.

Someone recently recommended adding sugar and SuperThrive to the water. But, sugar, as I understand it, can interfere with roots absorption of water, so I was wondering if it might be harmful. And, if not harmful but helpful, why?
