I dug up all of my geraniums, took hundreds of cuttings. I potted the cuttings and the cut back mother plant and put them into my green house.
If you don't have a green house you can cut them back in put them each into a paper bag and replant next spring. You should have some good results.

So I can dig up the huge plants now in the ground, take some cuttings & plant indoors & the rest of the plants I can keep overwinter in a paper bag... just bare-no soil? That is what I kind of remembered my grandmother doing in the Fall back in Iowa but then wondered : did they really survive /regrow the next spring being dry in that paper bag in the basement over winter?!
Thanks, if this is so, I will try it but also dig some to a couple big indoor pots as well as some cuttings in smaller container!
Grandma always had geraniums all year growing indoors also in the sun in the deep window sills of the house!

It is amazing how well geraniums that are just pulled from the ground with some roots do when stored over winter in a cardboard box or paper bag. They might look pretty terrible in the spring, but they do indeed perk up when put back into the ground and watered. You might mist the plants once or twice during the winter, but mostly just leave them alone.

Thank you, thank you both! Should I prune back the big plants back after I dig them up outside before I 'bag' them? They are huge, so guess I'd have to in order to place them in bags! The prunings then I could use as cuttings to pot over winter? They have done so well in the ground this summer.... HUGE.... each must be almost 2 ft. across!
In the ground in summer.. do they do better by some pruning all season (I haven't)?
